How about venturing to Transylvania?
It was named the No. 1 region to visit in 2016, by Lonely Planet.
“Transylvania is experiencing a renaissance, with cutting-edge art scenes, emerging nightlife, excellent skiing and rich wildlife watching including bison, wolves, lynx and bears.”
More and more, there's a charming mix of old and new — visitors will still see horses and carts in the countryside, but also extremely modern areas with top services.
The Saxon Villages
A wealth of landscape and eight centuries of unique history
With its more than 150 well preserved fortified churches of a great variety of architectural styles (out of an original 300 fortified churches), south-eastern Transylvania region in Romania currently has one of the highest numbers of existing fortified churches from the 13th to 16th centuries.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania are seven villages (six Saxon and one Székely) founded by the Transylvanian Saxons. They are dominated by fortified churches and characterized by a specific settlement pattern that has been preserved since the late middle Ages.
Even Prince Charles of Great Britain is in love with these regions and has bought holiday house in the village of Viscri.
You can go to visit the blacksmith's house or brick house (the one who builds bricks), where traditions have been preserved despite the passage of years.
