Located 170 kilometers southwest of Marrakech on the Atlantic coast.
Since the 16th century, Essaouira has also been known by its Portuguese name of Mogador. Essaouira is an exceptional example of a late-18th-century fortified town, built according to the principles of contemporary European military architecture in a North African context.
Start by a tour of the busy fishing port where you can see traditional wood boats being made. Tour the walled medina a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Narrow winding streets lined with colorful shops, whitewashed houses and heavy old wooden doors make it a wonderful place to stroll.

See the dramatic, wave-lashed ramparts that surround the medina are a great place to get an overview of the labyrinth of streets.
The ramparts were used in the opening scene of Orson Welles’ famous movie Othello for a panoramic shot. Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens and Frank Zappa all visited Essaouira at some points of their careers.
A collection of European brass cannons from the 18th and 19th centuries lines the walkway here and you’ll also get great views out to sea.
