Rajasthan - The Incredible state of India
India is a land of vibrant and colourful festivals and celebrations which keep us busy throughout the year. Every festival in India – and there are many – is unique, celebrating some aspect of culture and life, from a God to a season to an activity from the sublime to the ridiculous; it is this profusion of exuberant, multi-coloured gaiety that creates India’s character and vibrancy which visitors can’t help but fall in love with.
There are many amazing opportunities to combine an incentive trip to India with an authentic cultural experience but one of the most fun, and best known is the famed Pushkar Camel Fair.
Held in October- November at the time of the Kartik Purnima full moon, Pushkar Camel Fair is one of India’s most highly-rated travel experiences, a spectacle on an epic scale, where tribes gather with more than 11,000 camels, horses and cattle. Visitor numbers to view this spectacle reach over 400,000 people over a period of fourteen days.
For the traveller, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the colour, spectacle and carnival of one of the last great traditional melas on earth, which brings together livestock, farmers, traders and villagers from all over Rajasthan.
The fair is in itself a spectacle of colour and excitement with camel and horse races, animal beauty pageants, locals selling wares, fun fares and so much more. This is truly a sensory overload and a once in a lifetime experience.
Specially customized tented camps are pitched for the two weeks of the festival, visits to the fair grounds and surrounding areas are done by camel carts or by riding on the camels themselves. This is a truly authentic experience which gives the visitor a glimpse into the region’s culture in a totally immersive way that is impossible to come by at other times of the year.
The Pushkar Fair experience easily combines with either a traditional Golden Triangle program or beyond and to maximise the experience without becoming overwhelmed, we recommend at least a 2-night stay.
In 2017, the Pushkar Fair dates are October 28th to November 4th.
This part of the world has many reasons to celebrate all year around giving travellers many opportunities to share in those moments of happiness. If you throw yourself into it, you will have a wonderful time and have amazing stories and photographs to share.
