France inland waterways!

December 2014

France is blessed with a wide range of inland waterways from large to small!
And river cruising is one of the latest ‘musts’ for both incentive and leisure travel.

The well-known rivers such as the Seine, the Saone and the Rhone especially offer cruises with top end large cruise boats with a capacity of up to 75 Cabins.
Itineraries are usually from five to seven days but of course tailored itineraries can be arranged for back to back groups.

The lesser known waterways are the small intimate canals that thread their way through such luxuriant areas as Burgundy, the Bordeaux region, Alsace and Champagne

Is it an accident of nature that the finest areas of French wines are irrigated by beautiful waterways – the canal du midi, the Burgundy canal, the Rhone river from Burgundy through Beaujolais to Avignon and Chateauneuf du Pape, the canal from Bordeaux to St Emilion, the Marne winding its way through the Champagne vineyards or discovering the fascinating area of Alsace with visits to Strasbourg or Colmar.

The most popular cruises in France travel the Seine river from Paris to Normandy on the Atlantic coast: the route passes great areas of cultural and historic interest: Malmaison the home of Napoleon and Josephine, Giverny of Claude Monet fame, the town of Rouen where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, the narrow bends of the Seine flow past the castle of William the Conqueror and the eagle nest that was Rommel’s HQ in 1944.

Before arriving at the ocean there is a chance to visit the charming port town of Honfleur or continuing to the Landing Beaches of Omaha and St Laurent!
River cruising allows the great comfort of travelling from area to area without changing hotel(s) nor re-packing bags whilst enjoying excellent cuisine, fine service and good company!

The same river beauty exists in other European countries especially Holland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary and Austria but even in these countries the great choice of waterways never equals the French river map!

At Holt Paris Welcome Service, the euromic member for France, we have a privileged knowledge of the waterways and the difference in quality to be found amongst the wide range of companies offering river cruises in the various areas.

If you need help in choosing just ask us for advice and allow us to provide services for pre and post cruises and why not some very special excursions along the way that may not be offered by the cruise companies themselves.

The main providers in the sector are:
